Moving to a new iPhone

Porcelain keeps your logs only on this iPhone, with no account. If you delete the app, your logs are deleted with it, so save a backup file first. To move them to a new iPhone, choose one of these options:

  1. Your iPhone's own backup. If you set up the new iPhone from an iCloud Backup, a backup on your computer, or Quick Start, Porcelain and your logs come along.
  2. A backup file. On your current iPhone: Settings › Backup & Restore › Save a backup file (photos included). Send it to the new iPhone with AirDrop or Files. On the new iPhone, install Porcelain and open the file, or use Restore from a backup file. You can also restore from the first screen: "Moving from another iPhone? Restore a backup file."

Questions

Where are my logs stored?

Only on your iPhone, inside Porcelain. They aren't sent to us or anyone else, and there's no account.

What does Porcelain notice?

You look and log; Porcelain does the noticing. It works out your normal, and points out changes in your own logs on Today, like pale or looser poops several days in a row, fewer poops than usual in a week, or a longer gap than your usual. Those are free. With Plus, Your week sets last week beside the 4 weeks before, and Porcelain points out what lines up with your poops, like your period or a habit. Notices are cards on Today, never notifications. Only days you logged count, so a week you take off from logging stays quiet on purpose. Turn them off in Settings › Notices. A notice shows what you logged; it isn't a diagnosis.

What can't a poop log tell you?

Blood isn't always visible: stool can look normal even when a test would find it. Colors change with food and supplements too. A log is for noticing change in your own pattern and for talking with a healthcare professional. It isn't a test, and it doesn't replace the screening your doctor recommends.

Can I log for my kids or parents?

Yes: Settings › People › Add a person, then switch between people at the top of Today. You and one family member are free; more family members need Porcelain Plus to log. Everyone's logs stay on this iPhone and aren't shared with other iPhones.

Can Porcelain use my sleep and steps?

Yes, if you'd like. Turn on Apple Health in Settings › Apple Health. Porcelain reads your sleep, steps, periods, water and fiber and sets them beside your logs in Habits side by side, with nothing to tap each day. It only reads, doesn't keep a copy, and nothing leaves your iPhone.

Can I log bloating or cramps?

Yes. Turn on "Tummy today" in Settings › Habits (it's also in Settings under Today). Bloated, Gassy and Cramping appear under your habits: tap one on any day, with or without a poop. To mark one strong, tap the "Strong" button that appears under it on Today, or its switch in a day of History. They're counted in the doctor report and included in the CSV.

Can I use Porcelain on two devices?

Logs don't sync between devices. To move them, use a backup file.

What do the shapes mean?

They are the 7 shapes of the Bristol Stool Form Scale. See The Bristol stool chart, explained, or tap the (i) next to "Log a poop" in the app. For more about frequency, see How often should you poop?

I tapped the wrong shape.

Tap Undo on the note that appears, or tap the log on Today to change it. Deleted logs wait 30 days in History › Recently Deleted.

How do I get ready for a doctor's visit?

Open History › Report for your doctor and set the date under Next visit. In the week before, Today shows a card that opens the report. After you share a report, the next one can cover the days since your last report.

How do I find an old log?

In History, tap the month name to see twelve months at a glance, then tap a month to open it. To find a word you wrote in a note, such as a food or a place, tap the magnifying glass.

How do I cancel Porcelain Plus?

Open the Settings app › your name › Subscriptions › Porcelain. Your logs and history stay free either way.

How do I delete everything?

In the app: Settings › Delete All Data. Backup files you saved elsewhere and your iPhone's own backups must be deleted by you.

Is this medical advice?

No. Porcelain is for personal record-keeping. It is not intended to diagnose or treat any condition. Check with a doctor before making medical decisions.
